COSTA ALEGRE
La Manzanilla
La Manzanilla, meaning “the little apple tree” in Spanish, in reference to the fruit that grows on the Manchineel Tree which was used for ship-building by the Spanish conquistadores. This tranquil village captivates visitors with its serene beaches, lush mangroves, and friendly community vibe. Known for its unpretentious charm, La Manzanilla appeals to those seeking a slower pace of life. The town’s central plaza serves as a gathering spot, hosting vibrant markets and local festivities that showcase the area’s rich cultural heritage.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the nearby mangrove estuary, home to diverse wildlife, including crocodiles and exotic birds. Real estate options in La Manzanilla include beachfront properties and hillside homes with panoramic ocean views, making it a favorite among expats who value a balance of seclusion and community. The village’s natural beauty and welcoming spirit ensure it remains a cherished part of Costa Alegre.
La Manzanilla has become a hotspot for American and Canadian citizens looking to buy an affordable home on the coast. The downtown area has beautiful properties lining Tenacatita Bay’s calm waters, where as the hills above El Centro have spectacular views of the bay. Prices have not yet caught up with Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo and other coastal localities.
North of La Manzanilla lies Boca de Iguanas, which is basically a small settlement at the mouth of the large lagoon at the northern end of the Manzanilla Bay. Between the two settlements is a long stretch of sandy beach covered in coconut plantations which has been slowly becoming settled by homes, bungalos and glamping facilities.
La Manzanilla is a small town, with about 1500 full time residents and a couple hundred snow birds who only reside there in the winter.
