Cuyutlán

Cuyutlán is a charming coastal town renowned for its unique black sand beaches and the famous “Ola Verde” (Green Wave). This small town has become a popular destination for surfers, who are drawn to the consistent and challenging wave conditions. For those less inclined toward surfing, the town offers a tranquil beach experience with fewer crowds and a laid-back atmosphere.

The town is steeped in history, particularly as a center of salt production. Visitors can explore the Museo de la Sal (Salt Museum) to learn about the traditional methods used to extract salt from the nearby lagoon. Additionally, Cuyutlán is home to the Tortugario Ecological Center, a conservation facility dedicated to protecting sea turtles and other wildlife. The center offers educational tours and a chance to see turtles up close.

Cuyutlán’s beachfront is lined with small restaurants serving freshly prepared seafood dishes, including local specialties like pescado zarandeado (grilled fish). Accommodations range from quaint guesthouses to boutique hotels, making it a suitable destination for travelers seeking authenticity and comfort. Its combination of natural beauty and cultural richness ensures a memorable visit.

Recently Cuyutlán has become a popular destination for “beach houses” for people living in Guadalajara, Colima or Lake Chapala. Only 2.5 hours away from Guadalajara on a great freeway, this is one of the closest beaches to the city. While home prices have certainly gone up in Cuyutlán in recent years, ocean front homes are still relatively affordable compared to other areas.
