Costa Alegre

Located along the pristine coastline of southern Jalisco, the Costa Alegre region is a jewel of natural beauty and serene luxury. Situated about 1-3 hours south of Puerto Vallarta, Costa Alegre spans a vast stretch of land, encompassing 190 km (150 miles) of Pacific coastline, from Cabo Corrientes in the north to Rio Marabasco on the Colima / Jalisco border on the south. This region is renowned for its unspoiled beaches, secluded bays, and dramatic cliffs, making it one of Mexico’s most treasured coastal destinations. Unlike more commercialized areas, Costa Alegre has managed to preserve its natural charm, offering a unique blend of tranquility and elegance that appeals to both tourists and residents.

The name “Costa Alegre,” which translates to “Happy Coast,” perfectly captures the essence of this idyllic region. It is home to diverse ecosystems, including lush tropical forests, mangroves, and vibrant marine life, providing endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation. The area’s commitment to sustainability and ecological preservation has attracted environmentally conscious visitors and investors who value its pristine beauty and minimal environmental footprint.
Costa Alegre is also a haven for those seeking a luxurious yet authentic Mexican coastal experience. The region features a variety of destinations, from exclusive resorts and upscale communities to quaint fishing villages that retain their traditional charm. With eight main tourist destinations—Barra de Navidad, Careyes, La Manzanilla, Tenacatita, Punta Perula, Cuastecomates, Melaque, and Isla Navidad—Costa Alegre offers something for everyone, whether it’s luxury, adventure, or a peaceful retreat.
While the biggest town in the Costa Alegre region is actually Cihuatlán, it is located away from the beach and generally avoided by tourists. Barra de Navidad and Melaque are two popular coastal towns which are located near each other, separated by a lagoon. The combined sub-urban area formed by these two form the “tourism capital” of the Costa Alegre. There is a sizeable population of expats residing in Barra de Navidad, Melaque and La Manzanilla, most are snow birds but a percentage live in the area year round.
